What makes a porta potty wheelchair-accessible?
A wheelchair-accessible porta potty has a ground-level floor with no step, a wide door, grab bars beside the toilet, a lower seat height, and enough floor space for a 60-inch turning circle. The unit is roughly twice as wide as a standard porta potty, so it needs a flat, open spot.
How many accessible units does an event need?
The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, section 213.2, call for at least 5 percent of portable toilets in each cluster to be accessible, with a minimum of one. An event with 1 to 20 units needs at least 1 accessible unit. An event with 30 units in one cluster needs at least 2.
We call these units wheelchair-accessible, not "ADA-compliant", because compliance depends on how the whole site is set up, including the path from parking. A firm, level route without curbs matters as much as the unit. Read ADA Standards §213 or ask your venue or permit office to confirm what your event needs.
