What does California require for jobsite toilets?

California construction sites follow Cal/OSHA, not only federal OSHA. Title 8 §1526 requires one toilet for every 20 employees or fraction thereof, counted for each sex. Title 8 §1527 adds one washing station per 20 employees, with water, soap and single-use towels, placed outside a chemical toilet.

Workers on siteCal/OSHA toilets (§1526, per sex)Cal/OSHA washing stations (§1527)Our recommendation, weekly service
1–4, one toilet1 (all-gender)1 (may be the sink inside the unit)1 unit with a sink inside
5–10111 standard unit + 1 hand-wash station
11–20112 units + 1 hand-wash station
21–40224 units + 2 hand-wash stations
41–60336 units + 3 hand-wash stations

Hand sanitizer alone does not meet §1527; the station needs water, soap and towels. The legal minimum and our recommendation are different numbers. A standard tank holds about 60 gallons. On a 40-hour week, ten workers fill it close to its limit by service day, so we suggest one unit per ten workers with weekly service. Confirm counts for your site with your safety officer. The official rule is at Title 8 §1526, and washing facilities are covered in Title 8 §1527.

How often is a construction porta potty cleaned?

A construction porta potty is cleaned once a week on a monthly rental. Each service pumps the waste tank, refills the blue deodorizer, scrubs the seat, walls and urinal, and restocks toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Crews of more than 10 per unit should add a second weekly visit.

Drivers leave a dated service tag inside the door, so your superintendent can show an inspector when the unit was last cleaned. Summer heat in the Willits and Ukiah valleys speeds up odor, so July through September crews often move to twice-weekly service.

Which units work best on Mendocino County jobsites?

Standard porta potties plus one hand-wash station per 20 workers cover most Mendocino County jobsites. Crews under 5 with one toilet can use a unit with a sink inside instead. Use towable units for road and fencing crews, and a restroom trailer for long projects with office staff and power.

Placing a porta potty on a rural or hillside site

Rural and hillside jobsites need a level pad and a truck path. Our service truck must park within about 25 feet of the porta potty, on ground firm enough for a loaded vehicle. On steep Brooktrails and Pine Mountain lots, we stake units or strap them to a post so wind and soft soil cannot tip them.

  • Keep units at least 10 feet from open trenches and excavations.
  • Do not place units under scaffolding, eaves that drip, or a crane's swing radius.
  • In winter, set units on gravel or plywood so they stay upright on wet clay (see the rainy-season placement guide).
  • Leave the door facing the work area, not a neighbor's window.

Rebuilding after a wildfire? The Redwood Valley page and Lake County page cover burn-area access. For quantities by crew size, use the porta potty calculator, and see our Cal/OSHA jobsite guide for handwashing and distance rules, or the 4-slide Cal/OSHA web story.

Contractor questions

How many porta potties does my crew need under Cal/OSHA?

Cal/OSHA Title 8 §1526 requires at least one toilet for every 20 employees or fraction thereof, counted for each sex, and §1527 requires one washing station per 20. A crew of 1 to 20 needs 1 toilet and 1 washing station. Crews under 5 with one toilet may use a sink inside the unit.

How is the monthly jobsite rental billed?

Jobsite units bill every 28 days, not by calendar month. Each 28-day cycle includes the unit and one service visit per week. Delivery and pickup are charged once, on the first and last invoice.

Can you send a certificate of insurance or a W-9?

We email a certificate of insurance naming your company or the general contractor, plus a W-9, the same day you ask. Purchase order numbers go on every invoice.

Do you have units for road crews that move every few days?

Towable units mounted on a small trailer are made for road, fence and utility crews that move. The crew can hitch and tow the unit, and our service truck finds it by the address or pin you text us.

Do you offer contractor pricing?

Contractors with 3 or more units, or with an open account, get account pricing on monthly cycles. Ask for it on your first call so the quote reflects it.

Can the service day be moved for our concrete pour or inspection?

The weekly service day can be set to fit your schedule. Give us 24 hours notice and the driver will come before the pour, the inspection, or the weekend shutdown.
